Diet plan for pregnant women during Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month in Islam. Muslims around the world carry out fasting for a whole month. Although this process is not easy to complete but consistency and dedication along with the love for the Islam is a compulsory tradition.

Women in Islam are given special place and respect. Although fasting in Ramadan is a must for everyone, but our doctors at Medicure Clinic inform us that Islam has allowed pregnant women, among few other groupings of people, to be exempt from the fasting. They can complete the fasting later whenever the person is ready and healthy to do so or give food to another; as the Quran, Islamic Holy Book says, “(Fasting for) a limited number of days so whenever among you is ill or on a journey then an equal number of other days (are to be made up). And upon those who are able – a ransom (as substitute) of feeding a poor person (each day)” (The Qur’an, 2007; S 2, V 183).

Medicure Polyclinic doctors are concerned for your health as fasting can make your body tired and in a pregnant woman fasting has a tendency to cause negative health outcomes due to sugar levels’ decreasing or less fluid intakes. Our doctors suggests that for a pregnant woman, although everyone have somewhat change in their system, consulting a doctor is must to gather preciseness. No specific diet plan can be made but below are some tips from our doctors that can be noted down regarding their diet.

  1. Using milk and milk products in both dawn and sunset eating times.

  2. Take lots of fluids like water, milk etc.; especially in the aftari and at the sunset.

  3. Include maximum proteins in your diet.

  4. Don’t eat so many fats while breaking the fast at sunset.

  5. Also avoid carbonated drinks instead include lots of milk products, fiber and soups.

  6. Use fruits which are having more iron in them comparatively for example mangoes and grapes.

So eat well at pre-dawn and include vegetables, soup and lots of liquid, while in iftaar use less spicy, less sugary and more calcium/protein diet with whole wheat food, fruits, yogurt and whole cooked meal with less oil in the dinner after the iftari.

However, our doctors suggest that pregnant woman should not go through any fasting especially in the third trimester, but this is still debatable.
