Coronavirus – What it is and Where to get the Vaccination

According to our doctors; coronavirus is a common type of virus that crates an infection in a person’s upper throat, sinuses or nose. The majority of coronaviruses are not dangerous.

However, our doctors at Medicure Polyclinic warns us that there are some varieties that are more serious, for example, over 100 people have passed away due to the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) which first emerged in 2012 starting in Saudi Arabia and then to other countries such as Europe, Asia and Africa. The first American contracted and was hospitalized for MERS in April 2014 in Indiana. This person had just returned from being in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, people have died from SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome back in 2003. Both SARS and MERS are types of coronaviruses.

What is the Coronavirus?
The coronavirus was first identified back in the 1960s, but their origin is not known. Their name was derived from the crown like shape. There are some situations where the coronavirus is able to infect both humans and animals. The majority of coronaviruses are spread in the same manner that other viruses responsible for colds are spread – through an infected person sneezing, coughing or touching their face ant then touching things that others use, such as doorknobs. Virtually everyone has or will contract some type of coronavirus during their life, with this occurring most commonly in younger children. While cases of coronaviruses are much more common in colder months, anyone can contract them at any time.

Common Symptoms of the Coronavirus
The majority of coronaviruses are extremely similar to any other type of upper-respiratory infection, which includes a fever, sore throat, coughing and runny nose. In most situations, you will not be able to tell if you have a coronavirus or some other type of cold causing virus, for example a rhinovirus.

What to do about a Coronavirus
Currently, there is no available vaccine for the coronavirus. However, you can prevent the coronavirus infection by taking the same precautions you do to prevent a common cold.
  • Wash hands well with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer with an alcohol base.
  • Keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes.
  • Do not come in close contact with any other people who are infected.

If you contract a coronavirus, you can treat it in the same way you would a cold by getting plenty of rest, drinking fluids and taking over the counter medicines for fever and sore throat. In some situations a steamy shower or humidifier may help to ease the symptoms that you are experiencing.
