How Skin Cancer Diagnosed? Is there any treatment?

How Your Dermatologist Can Diagnose Skin Cancer?
First of all to diagnose skin cancer, your dermatologist will look at your skin and carefully examine all moles, dry patches and growths. The doctor can also use a device named dermoscope for better look. Dermoscope shines light on the skin and magnifies it. This helps to see structures and pigments in the skin.
If you doctor will find something suspicious, that looks like skin cancer, he will remove a part of it and send it to a lab. This is called biopsy. Skin cancer cannot be diagnosed without a biopsy.
Don't be afraid of the procedure, as it's absolutely safe, very quick and easy for your doctor to perform. The risks and discomfort are minimal.

Is There Any Treatment for Skin Cancer?
How actually dermatologists treat skin cancer? There are known many treatments for that. Each specific case requires an individual approach. So, before prescribing you anything, your doctor will consider the following:

  • Type of skin cancer
  • Whether this specific form of cancer is aggressive
  • Skin area where the skin cancer appears
  • Stage of the cancer (the level of how deep the skin cancer has grown and if it has spread)
  • General health condition of the patient

Only after exploring the above details, your doctor will consider one or a couple of the following treatments.

Surgical treatment
This is one of the common ways of treatment, when the goal is to remove skin cancer. It is possible when the cancer has not spread enough. To completely remove skin cancer the following surgical methods are applied:

  • Excision
  • Mohs surgery
  • Curettage and electrodesiccation (sometimes curretage is used alone)

Other treatments
Although surgical treatment is considered to be very effective, it's not right for every case of skin cancer. For example, some patients cannot undergo surgery, in other case it's impossible to remove all the skin cancer, so it's required more treatment to gert rid of the cancer. But if the skin cancer is diagnosed very early, no surgery is needed.
The other skin cancer treatments include:

  • Cryosurgery
  • Immunotherapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Photodynamic therapy
If caught early skin cancer can be properly treated and cured. Even melanoma that can be deadly, has a 100% cure rate. So, don't worry and visit your dermatologist if you suspect skin cancer.
